What does a missing-number question teach that a plain sum does not?
A question like 4 + ? = 13 asks for a part rather than a total, which is the thinking subtraction needs. Learners who can answer "what is 4 + 9" often freeze on "4 plus what makes 13", even though it is the same fact.
How should the hint button be used?
As a way back in, not a way out. Try the question first, then read the strategy once you are stuck and use it on the next question: the hints name the method — count on from the larger addend, make ten, share the total into equal parts — rather than only giving the number.
Why do some answers need a second box, or a minus sign?
Because not every answer is a whole positive number. A division can leave something over, so 13 ÷ 4 needs a share and a remainder; a decimal answer such as 0.4 needs the point and the digits after it; and a negative answer such as −3 needs the minus sign to show it is below zero.
